10 Tips for the Beginner Reseller

Published on 17 June 2025 at 20:02

If you are a beginner reseller, there are a few things you should know that will save you time and money!

1.Start with What You Own
Before hitting the thrift stores, shop your own home. You’d be surprised what everyday items—like old electronics, decor, or clothes—can bring in some quick cash and help you learn the ropes without spending a dime.

2. Skip the Commemorative Bells and Figurines
Unless you're a collector or know it's rare and in demand, leave it on the shelf. Thrift stores are packed with them for a reason—they’re notoriously slow to sell.

3. Don’t Overspend on a Maybe
Unless you’re sure it’s a home run, keep your cost low—just a few bucks per item. Most resale platforms are built on bargain pricing, so protect your margins and make every flip worth your time.

4. Research Before You Source
You never know what you’ll find, but going in blind isn’t the move. Spend time researching what’s trending and what actually sells on each platform. A little knowledge goes a long way when it comes to spotting profitable pieces.

5. If the Price Is Right, Buy the Weird Thing
Offbeat, unusual, and “what even is that?” items can be surprise bestsellers. If it’s cheap and catches your eye, grab it—you might just stumble on a niche market goldmine.

6. Clean It Up Before You List
A quick Google search can teach you how to safely clean leather, silver, clothing, and more. Restoring an item’s shine (literally) can boost its value and make your listing stand out.

7. Stick with Name Brands
Some brands never go out of style. Think Nike, Levi’s, Ralph Lauren—classic, timeless, and consistently profitable. When in doubt, a recognizable label is usually a smart buy.

8. New with Tags? Yes, Please.
Even unbranded items can sell if they’re brand new. If the tags are still attached, chances are someone will want it—especially if the price is right. Bonus points if it’s a name brand!

9. Don’t Rely on Just Thrift Stores
Thrift stores know they’re in the resale game now—and prices reflect it. Broaden your sourcing horizons. Yard sales, estate sales, auctions, even curbside finds can uncover deals you’ll never see on a thrift store shelf.

10. Make Every Flip Worth Your Time
Your time is valuable. Look for a healthy return on each item, and don’t waste energy listing things that’ll only bring in pennies. Be selective, strategic, and always aim for profit.
